Welcome to Make It By Monday, GOOD's weekly DIY feature in which we curate, demystify, and add our own tips for craft projects from around the web (and our apartments). This week: Pops of color for spring.
Spring has arrived, and the season's tulips, Peeps, and Easter eggs have got me seeing the world through rose-, yellow-, mint-, and powder-blue-tinted glasses. Here are seven projects that will help you bring a dash of color to your garden, tech, wardrobe, and walls.
Step up your staircase. Dress up your daily trudge in the season's brightest colors with this colorfully layered staircase from Passementerie. You can also use this technique to add spring hues to other nooks in your house, like a windowsill, bookshelf, or medicine cabinet.
Grow up your garden. I've been on the lookout for some quality hanging planters that are a little classier than those green and terracotta plastic versions you find at your local hardware store. Poppytalk satisfies my greenery needs with these glossy painted tin planters. Add polka dots or stripes to mix things up a bit.
Dress up your sandals. These beaded sandal straps from P.S., I made this are an awesome DIY fix for slippery (or too simple) spring sandals. Once you've made the beaded strings, you can hook them on to your flats and heels, too.
Stitch up your napkins. For my project this week, I sewed some bright, funky napkins. I started with a basic napkin tutorial, then sewed pops of color into the edges using a blanket stitch and a few threads of embroidery floss.
Liven up your camera strap. With sunny weather upon us, I'm looking forward to heading outside, soaking up some Vitamin D, and taking lots of pictures of doing nothing but that. This triangle camera strap tutorial from Designlovefest will make your camera as bright as the images you'll be taking all season long.
Upcycle your drinking habit. Turn your spent wine bottles into a fashion statement with this embroidered cork necklace from Sewella on The Etsy Blog. Then, drink more, and test out new arrangements, colors, and embroidered shapes for your next piece.
Pump up your headphones. When presented with a pair of boring black headphones, star GOOD designer Kate Slovin busted out her crochet needles and whipped up some colorful covers. To enhance your own headphones, Kate shared her pattern (Warning! Deep crochet instructions ahead):
Start with the magic ring method, single crochet 6, and pull the ring tight. Then, follow these instructions: Row 1: ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, sl st to beg sc to join. Row 2: ch 1, (2 sc in same st, 1 sc), sl st to beg sc to join. Row 3: ch 1, (2 sc in same st, 2 sc), sl st to beg sc to join. Row 4: ch 1, (2 sc in same st, 3 sc), sl st to beg sc to join. Row 5: ch 1, dc around, sl st to beg sc to join. Round 6: ch 1, (dec over next two stitches, dc 1) around, sl st to beg sc to join. Round 7: ch 1, (dec over next two stitches, sc 5) around, sl st to beg sc to join. You can also slip some stitches around the hardware to attach the cover to the headphones.
